Subject: Is Samuel Strong really Samuel McCluinny?
Date: Thu, 24 Apr 2003 16:23:32 -0400I believe that the Samuel Strong you have listed as the sonof Elizabeth Strong and Jacob Kepperling, (http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~russellgs/d0001/g0000099.html#I07 184 )is my G-G-Grandfather. His name is actually SamuelMcClunny and he is the Grandson of Sarah Strong.
I got this information form his (Samuel McClunny) pensionapplication file as a Civil War veteran. He states"My father came out of the Mexican war, wounded and diedsoon after, and my mother remarried to another man, he waskilled in the battle of Shilo. I lived with mygrandmother until went in to the service. I livedwith my Grandmother Mrs. Sarah Strong, who resided from1850 to 1860, in Center county Pa."
He was born in Mifflin County August 8th, 1847. Idon't know for sure what his Mother and Father's namesare. Here is the Census information I have on him.
Sarah Strong is in the household of Jacob Kepperling andElizabeth in the 1850 Mifflin County Census. Jacob Kepperling 25 M Elizabeth " 25 F SarahStrong 55 F Samuel " 18 M Foster " 15 M Martha " 13 F Samuel " 3 M
Sarah Strong is the head of household in the 1860 CentreCounty Census. SarahStrong 64 F John " 29 M Martha " 21 F James F. " 23 M
Samuel McClunny 13 M
Perhaps Elizabeth was married to Samuel McClunny's fatherprior to her marriage to Jacob Kepperling. If that isthe case then Jacob died at the battle of Shilo in1862. If you have any additional information I wouldappreciate it. This is a link to Samuel McClunny'spage on my home page. Look forward to hearing fromyou.

Could it be that since Sarah McClunny is listed as thegrand daughter of the head of the household (ElizabethKepperling) and Sarah Strong is listed as the mother of thehead of the same household in the 1880 Census Russellattached, that Elizabeth is the daughter of Sarah and atone time was married to a McClunny?
(RGS- There is supposedly a grave marker with the nameMcCluneyhttp://www.rootsweb.com/~pamiffli/cem_mif_vol/MCCemIndex23.gifin Corbin Cem. in Bratton Twp., Mifflin Co. a map oflocation is here:http://www.rootsweb.com/~pamiffli/cemeteries_mif/MCCemBratton2.gif
There are about 90 graves and 33 family names in thiscemetery. I haven't found a document with thetranscriptions yet.)
I'm very interested about whether or not My G-G-GrandfatherSamuel is the father of the Sarah McClunny listed in the1880 Census, or the daughter of a sibling of his. Maybe she is the daughter of Samuel and his first wife?(the marriage you spoke of). Now it's my turn tospeculate, maybe Samuel's first wife died giving birth toSarah and he left her with his mother and Grandmother whenhe went to Ohio.
(RGS - This seems to be very logical! See next paragraph.)
I am very curious about the marriage for Samuel McClunny inMifflin County, as far as I know Samuel was married onlyonce in Pleasant Hill, OH to Florence Shellebarger onJanuary 11, 1873. I would very much appreciate moreinformation regarding this marriage.
(RGS - I have a copy of "Marriages of Mifflin County1822-1885" by Dan McClenahen, Reedsville, PA 1981. On p.51, Item# 61. Samuel McCluny, Centre Co. & Sarah E. Henry,Armagh Twp., 3/2/68
Perhaps, as you said Sarah, his wife of two years, probablydied in childbirth or shortly thereafter in 1870 to adaughter Sarah McCluny. And she is that Sarah that islisted as age 10 and Grand-daughter to Elizabeth Kepperlingin the 1880 census.Samuel may have went to Ohio when his half brother WinfieldScott Kepperling moved to Miami Co.,OH. I have an 1880Census record of Winfield & Mary Kepperling in ElizabethTwp.As it was probably a rough journey he didn't want to takean infant with him and as you said left her in the care ofhis mother & grand-mother.)
Russell, perhaps James F. Strong on the 1860 Census isFoster from the 1850 Census. I've seen first andmiddle names reversed between two Census years a fewtimes. I know the ages are off as well, but I haveseen that quite often too.
( RGS - This could explain why I have a James FrederickStrong b. abt 30 May 1835 in my file and have no idea wherehe came from, as I didn't have an 1860 census to comparethe info to until now. I would come to the same conclusionas you. I would assume that somebody had assumed that hismiddle name was Frederick. As William Strong's son is JamesFrederick Strong. As far as the ages go I also noticed thatJames is listed as 23 instead of 25 and Martha is listed as21 instead of 23. In 1880 Sarah listed her age as 79 whenshe was really 84. Don't know how the John age 29 arrived Ihave him in my record w/ two different birth years, 1817 &1831. This is probably where the info came for the 1831date. However, 1817 would fit for the 1830 & 1840 Censusrecords for Samuel Strong in Armagh Co. I have notfound a listing for a John Strong age 19 in Mifflin Co.yet. Just the John Strong in Oliver Twp. b. 1817)
