David S. Culp was born in Stanwood, Michigan, July 15, 1858 and lived at home with his parents until he was 18 years of age at which time he began working for himself. About one year later his parents moved to Sparta.
At 33 years of age he was married to, Esther C. harrison of Thompsonville, Mich. Up to the last ten years he has been actively engaged in the lumber business: and the last ten years he has spent in and about Grand Rapids, living in Sparta for one year.
His mother was very well known to all in Sparta and surrounding country. His last illness of one and one-half years has been patiently born and amid great suffering, having one foot amputated and it would be necessary to remove the other.
Beside the widow he leaves three sons Reuben J. and Dewey S. of Grd. Rapids and Erwin J. of Marinette, Wis., one daughter, Mrs. Alto Small and one brother, Ernest of Grand Rapids. Funeral services were held from the Sparta Baptist Church Tuesday p. m. Rev. Harry Walker of Grand Rapids officiated.

Record number: 1429
Date of marriage: July 12 1883
Place of marriage: Grant
Groom: David S Rulf, white
Groom Residence: Sparta Centre
Age of Groom: 24
Birthplace of Groom: Michigan
Occupation of Groom: Laborer
Bride: Annie Jane Trexell, white
Residence of Bride: Grant
Age of Bride: 13
Birthplace of Bride: Michigan
Official Performing marriage: George J. Daniels, Justice of the Peace
Witnesses to Marriage: James P Daniels and Harriet E. Daniels of Grant
Date of Record: July 1883
The Surname of the groom is mispelled in the record book but I do not know if it was in error or the name was intentionally given by groom. On speculation I would guess that it was intentional due to the brides age of 13 and grooms age of 24. Probably was a shot gun wedding of sorts.
The Justice of the Peace, George Daniels and witness James P Daniels were Anna's cousin and uncle and the Witness Harriet E. Daniels was Anna's grandmother. They were verified from the 1870 Census for Grant, Newaygo, MI pg 2. Both families were living next door to each other and in 1880 for Grant, Newago, MI, Harriet and Anna's grandfather John Daniels were living in the same householdDavid is listed as David S Rulf in the marriage record.
