      The Local Forest Fires
In common with many other portions of the northwest, the Grand Traverse region has suffered from the visitation of forest fires. The long dry spell, which has made the woods like a vast timber box, only waiting for a spark to burst into flames, rendered this inevitable. Still there is a great cause for thankfulness that as little damage has as yet been done in this section. Fires had been running in the woods for several weeks in all directions, and the air was filled with smoke to a very unpleasant degree. On Sunday a peculiarly hot, dry wind began to blow, and earth and air seemed in such a condition that fires burst out almost spontaneously. By Monday farmers and others began to have a desperate battle to keep the flames from their houses and property. The Elk Rapids stage driver came through with scorched garments, and reported that at Mitchell=s in east Bay it was a hand to hand fight to save the mill and houses from destruction. Monday evening word came from Mr. Thorn's, on the peninsula, that his property was in danger, and a call for volunteers sent assistance to him, which did good service in saving his house. Fires which had been burning east of Boardman lake began to creep nearer the village, and the sky was crimson all night long with their light. By Tuesday there was imminent danger. The air was filled with partly burned leaves that came sailing down into dried grass and tinder-like rubbish of back yards and alleys. Carelessly dropped cigar stubs or flying sparks started little smouldering fires on sidewalks and streets, which were quickly trampled out. The big hoses were brought out and attached to the hydrants and everything in reach of the water works was thoroughly wet down. A force of patrolmen were put on the streets and alleys whose duty it should be to keep keen watch over every sign of incipient fire. Toward evening Oakwood was in danger, and citizens began to turn out under the direction of the fire department to fight back the flames. Back fires were set and wagon loads of water barrels filled from the nearest hydrants and carried to the scene of action. Vigorous efforts checked the advance of the flames, but still the wind blew in fresh gusts, and strict watch was kept. Wednesday morning the wind had changed to the northwest, and though a [illegible] was kept out all day, it was hoped that imminent danger had passed. This morning the patter of rain in the morning light sent a thrill of joy through all beasts, but at the present writing the raid is over, the sun shining brightly and it is to be feared other dry, hot days are before us.
It is impossible to gather in an account of losses; doubtless much damage has been done wherever there has been fire. A farmer named Hayes, in Homestead lost his barn and all its contents. Southeast of town, Mr. Goodrich met with heavy losses in hemlock timber, a large young orchard burned and other losses, all amounting to at least $1000. At Walton, Dr. McConkie had hard work to save his building and the town was seriously threatened. At Elk Rapids much uneasiness was felt, and a great quantity of wood on Torch Lake was burned. At Fife Lake the village was for a time in serious danger. That a speedy end may come to this state of affairs is the earnest prayer of all. Meanwhile vigilance is the price of safety.
