* from the notes of Dr BT McGhie : With all his social and professional obligations, B.T. still did not forget his love for books. He often took time to read and even make notes about any new books he encountered. He was once offered the chair of the medical board of Queens University in Kingston but turned it down because of his age. He retired to his farms and raised horses, often showing them at local fairs. He was a Conservative, an Anglican, and a
member of the Orange Lodge. Once, when Liberal politician D'Arcy McGee came to Elgin to speak, the doctor took an active stand against him. The "old doctor" died on October 18, 1893 after tripping on a rug, exclaiming "This is the end!" He was eighty-two years of age. He is buried with his second wife Mercy Ophelia at the cemetery in Elgin.
______________
11 1871 census as Anselm 6, male - 1881 census lists Angelia 16, female (error?), no photos known, despite living until 1907, aged 43. Dr BT McGhie stated "she was rather delicate and never married". Was she physically or mentally disabled? - [S13] Jill Fyffe rfyffe@peterboro.net, Descendants of Roger Stevens, b.1700, (Outline report 01/10/1999), pg. 5,paragraph A.2.n.(3) (Reliability: 0).

Roberts reply to the question of the m. _________ TRUE husband as stated in the original source for Gertrude Florence McGhie (from the Jan 1999 document from Jill Fyffe).
The info you mentioned:
"True" was indeed Gertrude Florence McGhie (25 Aug 2870 - 10 Sept 1894). She had been engaged to Rev. Robert McAmmond, the brother of her sister Margaret's husband Dr. Fletcher McAmmond. She died before they married. He later moved to China to do 25 years of missionary work. I'll send you a pdf of my current research document, which includes named, dates, etc.
My search these days, apart from looking into the Irish connection covered in Appendix 1, is to see if anyone has more information on BT & Mercy's 3rd child - Angelia Ophelia McGhie (Sept 28, 1865 - d. Oct 5, 1909). Considering she lived to be 44 - why are there no known photos of her? She lived with her parents until her mother died and then moved in with her sister Margaret in Scottsville, NY. She stayed there until she died. Reports speak of her being buried in NY yet there's also a tombstone in Elgin, Ontario. Where is she really? Her nephew Dr. Bernard T. McGhie referred to her as being "delicate" and that she never married. What did "delicate" mean back then? Could she have been disabled - mentally or physically? What's even stranger is that in the 1871 census, she is listed as Anselm McGhie and marked as male! In 1881, 1891, and 1901 the name is as we now know it and she's listed as female. The census taker seemed quite clear and specific too, with very good hand writing.
