    • Lived in a fine stone house built 1840 Lot 19 Con 7 along the road from Toledo to Philipsville.  (This was the lot granted to Marion STEVENS and sold by her brother Uriah to Isaac).  Was a trustee of the Philipsville Baptist Church built in 1865 (his name is on the plaque...Church is now a designated Heritage Bldg).  Wm Chester's younger  brother "F. A." had gone west in 1835 and Wm had considered going as well. In a letter written to him Mar 4, 1838 he was given the following advice re what to bring to the states:

" A wife, broadax and what tools you have, for me some broad cloth, look out for yourself or they will want duty from you.  You had better leave the name of some place  just over the river so that you can tell them that you are from York State and make them believe it or they will examine your goods and don't pay nobody until they ask you for it and then as little as you can.  Show this to Uncle Ira (Parish) and tell him that Williston (Stevens) saw his Uncle Joel (Parish) at Michigan City. If he come to this country with a team he must not fetch much load for the mud is very bad. He had best fetch two brood mares...corn is 3 bits per bus, wheat is a dollar a bushel, oats out of the question."

But Wm Chester didn't leave the Township. He got married and remained in Bastard. "Our STEVENS Story on the move by Elizabeth Stevens Stuart.
